Add Branding to Your Windows System Properties Window [Geek Tricks]

<img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk99/anoopengineer/oemlogo.jpg" /> You can display the Windows System properties by using the Windows key + Pause/Break key or right clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties. This window displays vital information about your computer and in case you bought the PC from a branded manufacture, their logo would be shown at the bottom. Wouldn’t it be cool to change this logo and have your blog’s logo (or even your photo) and URL (or your name) there instead of the manufacture’s logo? We are going to transform this: <img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk99/anoopengineer/system-properties-custom-manufactur.png" />    into this: <img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk99/anoopengineer/system-properties-custom-manufac-1.png" /> Here goes the steps: <ol> <li>Download <a href="http://anoopengineer.googlepages.com/oemlogo-dailygyan.zip">this zip file</a>. It contains two files – <code>oeminfo.ini</code> and <code>oemlogo.bmp</code> that you need to extract to your C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. </li> <li>If your System32 folder already contain these files, create their backup copies somewhere and overwrite them with the files in the zip archive. </li> <li>Now, if you take your System Properties window, you can see the DailyGyan’s geek mascot there. </li> <li>You can edit oemlogo.bmp using any image editors – MS Paint, Gimp, Photoshop etc. or create a new image from scratch. The final logo need to be a bmp file of size 180×114 pixels, named oemlogo.bmp and put into C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. </li> <li>You can edit oeminfo.ini using any text editor like Notepad. In this example I have given the manufacture name as <a href="http://www.DailyGyan.com/">http://www.DailyGyan.com/</a> and model name as Monster PC. Take a look at how it appear in the System Properties window. </li> </ol> If you take a look at oeminfo.ini file, you can see some lines beginning with <code>Line1=</code>, <code>Line2=</code> etc. Any text put in these lines are displayed when you hit the Support Information button. You can use this field to save stuff like your PC’s Tech support number, your local geek’s number, your blog’s address, wife’s birthday, anniversary dates etc. What do you think of this geek trick? Microsoft Launches Windows Mobile Applications Portal

It currently doesn’t have all those goodies iPhone store has; in fact it doesn’t have any of those. All you get is what Microsoft labels as business applications. So don’t expect to see a <a href="http://twitter.com/">Twitter</a> client there. The site runs on Silverlight technology and hence Linux guys will have to logon to a windows machine to access it. Even in Windows, it is a strict ‘IE only’ site. So Firefox users be warned. How To Forcefully Eject A USB Stick In Windows And Linux

But Windows says openly that it doesn't like you. So sad. <img height="107" src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk99/anoopengineer/usb_cannot_be_stopped_right_now.png" width="451"/> This can occur when some processes running in the background are accessing your USB drive. You cannot simply pull out the thumb drive, because you risk corrupting the data in it. Until now, your only way seemed to be shutting down the computer. Not any more, for here comes a very nifty little utility. Read along to find out more. <a href='http://www.pocketappreview.com/main/item/17'>EjectUSB</a> is an extremely tiny (250 KB) utility that finds out what all applications are using the USB disk, kills them all mercilessly and releases your disk from the Windows jail, all within a matter of seconds. All you have to do, is download the <a href='http://www.pocketappreview.com/main/media/software_zip/EjectUSB.zip'>zip archieve</a>, extract it to your USB disk and run the executable. In Linux, the procedure is a bit simple because you don't have to download any new utility. The program that you are going to use, called <code>fuser</code> comes pre-installed in almost all distros. If you are unable to unmount the disk using the GUI in GNOME or KDE, just open up a terminal and run <code>sudo fuser -k /media/usbdrive</code>. Change /media/usbdrive to where your USB drive is mounted. This command kills all processing accessing your usb drive and then a simple eject command from your GNOME or KDE explorer will do the trick. Note: In both Windows and Linux, remember to close all unsaved files in USB drive before attempting these.</div>

The whole idea began when Google decided to give Gmail as an addon in <a href='http://www.google.com/ig'>iGoogle</a>. When you add the Gmail gadget to igoogle, all your mails are routed through the igoogle address (google.com) instead of gmail.com, thereby defeating all filters that block gmail.com domain. So unless your office/school have blocked google.com, this method should work for you. Here is what you should do: <ol><li>Sign in to <a href='http://www.google.com/ig'>iGoogle</a> with your Google account. </li><li>Signup for iGoogle Sandbox. The new version of iGoogle which supports Gmail is offered only in iGoogle sandbox, which is aimed at developers testing out the new iGoogle gadgets. However, you too can use it by signing up <a href='http://www.google.com/ig/sandbox'>here</a>. Enter your First Name, Last Name and email address and hit Submit. <div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>You may want to know when your Windows was installed for a couple of reason. <ul><li>You are buying a second hand PC and if the owner claims to have never reinstalled the OS, then you can know the approximate age of the PC by knowing the installation date.</li><li>A good many number of Windows users, have the habit of re-installing Windows every six months / one year. This helps to keep the windows-bloat under control. You may need to know the installation day to schedule your next re-install.</li><li>You can find out if a retailer is trying to sell a used PC as brand new (provided he was dumb enough, not to wipe the system clean).</li></ul><a href='http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk99/anoopengineer/When-Windows-Was-Installed.png'><img height="122" src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk99/anoopengineer/When-Windows-Was-Installed.png" style="max-width: 800px;" width="255"/></a> Whatever be the case, the method to find the Windows installation date is damn simple. Take a command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd), and enter <code>systeminfo</code>. This command will show you way too much information, so better pipe it to some text file using <code>systeminfo > info.txt</code>.
